Web Development - Intranets |
Corporate Intranets
"For
organizations to be effective in the future,
employees are going to need
to work together on common tasks and
interact through an open communications
infrastructure. The flexible structure
of intranets not only improves a company's
employee communication and project
management capabilities, but it also enhances
its
interaction with customers."
By definition, "intranets" are
internal corporate networks based on
open World Wide Web standards. Intranets
use the same software, network equipment,
and computer languages as the Internet,
but they exist only within an organization.
Because these private networks operate
behind firewalls, corporate intranet
users are able to access the Internet
while protecting corporate data from
unauthorized outsiders.
What are corporate
benefits of an Intranet?
- Powerful
data management. Retrieval,
use, and management of complex
information
and complicated applications is possible through the Web's ability
to handle more users and data
than any other network in history.
- Ease
of Use. Anyone familiar with
how to use an Internet web browser
(such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer) already knows
how to use an Intranet,
because the universal interface is the same for both.
- Cost
Efficiency. Because an Intranet
takes advantage
of the Web's existing architecture
and public domain software,
it's easy to deploy
and to
maintain.
- Dynamic
workgroup exchange. An Intranet
changes the Web from read-only
content to a dynamic
workspace that can empower
local and global
workgroups to do business
efficiently and effectively.
